Becoming a Better Spinner (Spinning Basics)

This half-day hands-on workshop will lead less-experienced spinners through the basic skills and techniques of spinning wool on a spinning wheel. The following topics will be covered: • Different types of wheels; how to set them up and adjust them • Examining and preparing your fibre for spinning • Spinning comfortably at the wheel • Wool types and techniques for woollen v. worsted spinning • Plying • Winding a skein and wet finishing Participants will leave with a 2-ply skein to wet finish at home.

What to Bring

• Fully functioning spinning wheel • 3 bobbins • Tensioned lazy kate • Niddy noddy (optional)

NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Lisa Murray grew up listening to the creak of her mother’s Ashford Traditional wheel. Lisa is a graduate (with distinction) of the 2014-2025 OHS Spinning Certificate Program and now acts as a TA in the 6-year program. She loves to connect with local wool producers and enjoys the process of creating wearable art from sheep to finished garment. She teaches spinning locally as well as internationally on spinning retreats. She organizes spinning socials and participates in the local heritage museum’s fibre arts program. She is a member of the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners, has written articles for Fibre Focus and is a member of the Ottawa Valley Weavers’ and Spinners ‘Guild. Lisa is always learning and finds a lot of joy and contentment at her wheel.
