Ontario Handspinning Seminar

Diving into Fleece (Assessment)

Grace Clare

Morning

Let’s dive into Fleece! Join me for a fun and informative, hands on workshop. We will examine 5-6 fleeces, practice skirting, and assess the characteristics, soundness and consistency of each fleece. Potential uses and spinning techniques for each fleece will be discussed, as well as possible faults. Participants will have the confidence to assess potential fleece purchases, or examine their own fleeces, for type, soundness, consistency and cleanliness, and the knowledge to skirt and store their fleeces properly.

What to Bring

• Freezer bags for samples • Fleeces will be provided

My shepherding and fleece adventure began almost 30 years ago, with the purchase of a Corriedale Romney ewe and her two lambs. Since then the flock has grown to 34 adults including two rams. Shepherd Hill fleeces have been recognized both locally and at the Royal Winter Fair since 2007. I am a member of both the Belleville and the Warkworth guilds, the Upper Canada Fibre Shed, and sit on the District 7 Sheep Producers Board as a wool advocate and on the Handspinning Seminar Commitee as Board Representative. When not moving electronet for the sheep or walking my two Border Collies you can find me skirting fleece!
