Ontario Handspinning Seminar

Successful Combing

Kitt Fisher

Afternoon

In this session, we will learn everything to do with combing fibre prior to spinning. We will cover topics such as what kinds of combs there are; how to wash wool to make it easier to comb; the types of fibres that can be combed; what substances can make combing easier depending upon what types of fibre you are combing; what a ‘diz’ is and why you want one; how to blend fibres; and what to do with your leftovers after combing.
At the end of this session, the attendee will be able to: • determine which combs to purchase • learn how to use their combs most efficiently. They will have a sample of combed wool to spin. Each participant will be given the opportunity to try some combs.

What to Bring

• Spinning wheel or spindle • Any hand combs you currently have • Diz (if possible) • Apron or some heavy material to pro-tect your lap • Note paper/pens and scissors

Skill Level

Beginner Friendly

My life has spun around textiles and fibre arts since I was very young. Now decades later, my enthusiasm for learning about and playing with all varieties of fibre, dyes and textiles has not diminished. I continue to be fascinated with the infinite ways in which I can transform raw material into unique textile art creations. My fibre journey has rewarded me with opportunities in which to share my artistry through the facilitation of workshops and lectures ranging from spinning to natural dying to designing my own signature knit and woven pieces. My ideas and efforts have been acknowledged with awards, scholarships, and exhibitions. I'm a co-owner of Textile Sirens with Daf Summers, and we specialize in making extraordinary and eye-popping fibre and textile designs.
